Rhine Day Cruises from Frankfurt in a Low-Water November
Frankfurt, Tyskland

The Kaub gauge hit record low water in 2026, and since 31 October the Boppard round trip has turned back at Ehrenthaler Werth without reaching the Loreley. Winter sailings from Bingen and Rüdesheim begin on 19 November.

What still sails in November

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) Rheinschifffahrt (Middle Rhine, Koblenz to Mainz) carries its 200th-anniversary name in 2026. Its scheduled Middle Rhine service, with the Loreley and castle cruises, ran from 4 April to 18 October 2026, so what is left for November is Advent and charter work plus a limited Rüdesheim to St. Goarshausen winter run. A scheduled Loreley or castle leg costs €20 to €40 per person. The hulls are the big white twin-deckers with red-and-white funnel stripes and a sun deck of blue folding chairs, nosing into small wooden landing stages below terraced vineyards. Coach tours from Frankfurt use them in season.

Bingen-Rüdesheimer Fahrgastschifffahrt (counters in Bingen, Rüdesheim and Bacharach) is the operator to build a November date around, because its Winterfahrten run from 19 November to 20 December 2026. A Loreley cruise is €18 for an adult and €9 for a child, and castle cruises cost about the same. You arrange themed charters by phone. The boats are squat and white, with a glazed heated saloon and a blue-lettered hull, and they pass the stubby stone Mäuseturm on its island at Bingen. The same company runs the Bingen to Rüdesheim car ferry year-round, 05:30 to 22:00 in winter, and it keeps crossing when low water stops boats elsewhere.

Loreley-Linie (Boppard promenade) posts the low-water position on its own site. The round trip leaves at 10:00, 12:30 and 15:20, lasts 90 minutes and turns at Ehrenthaler Werth. Sunday winter sailings continue to 6 December, and a Glühwein run to Rüdesheim goes on 28 November. A winter package of ship and chairlift starts at €29.90, and line sailings outside the main season have to be arranged in advance. The ship is single-decked and white, with a long panoramic window band and a canopied stern deck, moored in front of a row of pastel half-timbered facades.

Standing on the Loreley without a boat

Loreley Besucherzentrum & Kultur- und Landschaftspark Loreley (the clifftop where the river narrows) opens daily from 11:00 to 16:00, and those hours hold from 1 November to 23 December 2026. The exhibition is free and the 3D film is ticketed (€). Pale gravel paths and timber decking lead to a barrier-free viewing platform cantilevered over the 130-metre slate rock, with the Rhine squeezed hard below. The culture-and-landscape park around it is free and barrier-free around the clock. You book guided plateau walks and a 3D-film-and-coffee package on 06771 599093.

Sesselbahn Boppard (above the Boppard promenade) runs Friday to Sunday, 10:00 to 16:00, from 1 November to 6 December 2026. An adult return is €12 and one way is €8; children up to 14 pay €7 return, and bikes and dogs cost €3 per single trip. The single-seat chairs with slim red footrests rise over a steep bare-vine slope to the Gedeonseck rail, where the Rhine's hairpin loop reads as four separate lakes. Boppard's Christmas market weekends are 27 to 29 November and 4 to 6 December.

Rüdesheim when the cable car is shut

Seilbahn Rüdesheim (over the vine rows above the town) is closed from 2 to 18 November 2026 and reopens on 19 November for the Christmas market, running daily from 11:00 to 18:00 until 23 December. An adult return is €12 and one way is €7.50; children aged 5 to 15 pay €6 return. Its online shop sells advance tickets. The gondolas are tiny open two-seaters in yellow and red, climbing over pruned vine rows as the grey Rhine and the Bingen rooftops drop away behind.

Niederwalddenkmal (Germania monument), Frankfurt

Niederwalddenkmal (the bluff above the Rhine bend) is where the cable car would have put you, so during the shutdown you walk or drive up instead. It is open-air, unticketed and free in all weather, and it has the best wide view of the Rhine bend. Germania stands in bronze on a tall sandstone plinth of battle reliefs, a raised imperial crown in one hand and a lowered sword in the other. Coaches park below and walk the final path.

Am Niederwald (the terrace at the monument) opens daily from 11:00, from 12 November to 20 December 2026, and almost nothing else up at the monument is staffed in late autumn. The terrace is stone, with green metal chairs and a low parapet, bare winter woodland on one side and the valley laid out below. Café plates and regional mains are €€.

Drosselgasse and the market huts

Drosselgasse, Frankfurt
Drosselgasse, Frankfurt

Drosselgasse (Rüdesheim old town) is 144 metres of cobbles, barely three metres wide, hung with wrought-iron tavern signs and strings of lights between leaning half-timbered gables. The Weihnachtsmarkt der Nationen fills the lane and the old town with more than 100 huts from more than 20 nations, from 19 November to 23 December 2026, 11:00 to 20:00 Sunday to Thursday and to 21:00 on Friday and Saturday. Walking the lane costs nothing and tavern drinks are €€. The lane is narrow enough that a large party should split up and book a tavern table ahead.

Breuer's Rüdesheimer Schloss (between Steingasse and Drosselgasse) pours its own estate wines by the glass and has been family-run since 1952. It plays live music through November 2026 and runs a mussels and Handkäs menu from 3 to 24 November, so book a table. The room is vaulted, with long wooden tables and a small band stage under a glass-roofed courtyard, inside a baroque townhouse of 1729. Rooms are from €109 per person.

Indoor hours in Rüdesheim

Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett (Brömserhof) opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00 right through November, and entry is €12, or €6 reduced. You see the collection only on a guided tour of 45 minutes, given in nine languages, so book ahead. More than 400 self-playing instruments stand in the rooms of a 15th-century knight's house: towering carved-wood orchestrions with stained-glass fronts show exposed pipework and drums, with pierced paper rolls and metal discs laid out alongside.

Asbach Besucher Center & Weindestillerie (Rüdesheim) charges nothing to enter and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00 to 17:00. Those doors stay open to 22 December 2026 and public tours run to 12 December; register in advance if you do not want to wait. The tour follows wine turning into brandy, the story behind Asbach Uralt. Copper pot stills with riveted onion-shaped heads and brass fittings sit behind glass under warm industrial light, and ranks of dark oak casks are stencilled in white. The tasting shop is €€.

Castles open in November

Marksburg (Braubach) stays open daily, and its winter hours from 2 November 2026 are 11:00 to 16:00, with tours on the hour and an English tour at 13:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry is €12 for an adult and €8 for a schoolchild, and a family ticket is €24. Every visit is a guided tour, so pre-book a slot. This is the hill castle on the Rhine that was never destroyed: the white-rendered keep rises over stepped gables above Braubach, the tour takes in a vaulted kitchen hearth and a steep rock stairway ridden by horses, and bronze cannon are ranked on the terrace. It closes on 24 and 25 December.

Burg Rheinfels (St. Goar) went onto winter hours on 31 October 2026 and now opens Friday to Sunday, 10:00 to 15:00, with last entry at 14:00. It shuts outright on snow and ice, and a midweek November trip finds it locked. An adult ticket is €6, a family ticket is €13, and a child aged 6 to 14 pays €3. A shuttle runs up from the town for anyone who cannot climb. It is the biggest ruin on the Rhine, roofless slate-grey curtain walls with dark low mine tunnels bored through the rock, looking down on St. Goar's church tower and the river.

Burg Rheinstein (on its crag directly above the water) keeps normal daily visiting, 10:00 to 18:00, only to 9 November 2026. From 19 November to 20 December it becomes the Märchenhafte Weihnachtsburg: Thursday and Friday run a LIGHT programme, 11:00 to 16:00, and Saturday and Sunday the full programme, 12:00 to 18:00. Programme days sell by timed admission, so book before you travel. The castle is neo-Gothic and cream-walled under crenellations, with a burgundy-and-gold stained-glass chapel window and a vine-draped terrace over the Rhine.

Burg Pfalzgrafenstein (its own island off Kaub) opens Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, 10:00 to 16:00, which holds for the whole of November 2026; it then closes for December and January. Admission is modest and the ferry crossing is extra. The site is small and the open passenger ferry from Kaub is tiny, so a coach party has to cross in batches. The fortress is a white, red-trimmed hexagon shaped like a stone ship, sitting mid-river on its own low island under a pointed black roof turret, and the ferry cannot dock when the river runs high.

Booking the day trip from Frankfurt

The full-day coach and cruise trips from Frankfurt run seven days a week, through a season that lasts from 1 April to 31 December 2026. Departures on 24 and 25 December 2026 are already fully sold out; other dates are still bookable. Book the two tour-only visits at the same time, because both run on scheduled slots.

Who the November trip suits

This suits a visitor with one spare day who will plan around winter hours. The day gives you a boat leg, a castle on reduced opening and a viewpoint you may have to climb to on foot.

Best time to go

Pick a Saturday or Sunday. Rheinfels, Pfalzgrafenstein and the Boppard chairlift keep weekend-only winter hours, and Marksburg puts its English tour on those two days. Then pick a date from 19 November, the day the Winterfahrten, the Rüdesheim market and the cable car all start. Start early, because the winter doors close in the middle of the afternoon.

Before you go

Mid-November means walking or driving up to the Germania monument, and weekend-only hours at Rheinfels and Pfalzgrafenstein. Book the guided-tour slots and your Frankfurt coach seat before you travel. See the Frankfurt guide and the Frankfurt hotel search.

Do Rhine cruises still run in November 2026?

Some do. The scheduled Middle Rhine timetable ended on 18 October 2026. Bingen-Rüdesheimer Fahrgastschifffahrt runs Winterfahrten from 19 November to 20 December 2026, Loreley-Linie has a low-water round trip from Boppard plus Sunday winter sailings to 6 December, and KD has Advent and charter sailings with a limited Rüdesheim to St. Goarshausen run. The full-day coach and cruise trips from Frankfurt go seven days a week.

Can a boat reach the Loreley in November 2026?

Not from Boppard. Since 31 October 2026 the Loreley-Linie round trip runs 90 minutes and turns at Ehrenthaler Werth because of low water. To stand on the rock itself, use the Loreley Besucherzentrum, open daily 11:00 to 16:00 from 1 November to 23 December 2026. The surrounding park is free and barrier-free around the clock.

Is the Rüdesheim cable car open in mid-November?

No. Seilbahn Rüdesheim is closed from 2 to 18 November 2026 and reopens on 19 November for the Christmas market, then daily 11:00 to 18:00 to 23 December. An adult return is €12. Before 19 November, the walk or the road up to the Niederwalddenkmal is free and open in all weather.

Which Rhine castles open on a midweek November day?

Marksburg, open daily on winter hours of 11:00 to 16:00 from 2 November 2026, with tours on the hour. Burg Rheinfels is open Friday to Sunday, 10:00 to 15:00, and closes on snow and ice. Burg Pfalzgrafenstein opens Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Burg Rheinstein has daily 10:00 to 18:00 visiting only to 9 November 2026.

Should I book ahead or buy tickets at the door?

You buy winter boat tickets over the counter in Bingen, Rüdesheim and Bacharach. Book ahead for the tour-only sites, Marksburg and Siegfrieds Mechanisches Musikkabinett, and for Burg Rheinstein's Christmas programme, which sells by timed admission. Frankfurt departures on 24 and 25 December 2026 are sold out; other dates are still bookable.
