From Frankfurt to Heidelberg and Rothenburg in One October Day
Door prices, real October hours, and the one day of the week when every climb in both towns is open.
Av Jonas FeldmannLast one out of the Bahnhofsviertel

Heidelberg Castle opens at 09:00 and takes its last admission at 17:30. The €11 ticket covers the funicular ride up, the Great Barrel and the Apothecary Museum. Rothenburg's covered wall walk is free and never closes.
The castle terrace and the funicular
Schloss Heidelberg is a red sandstone ruin on a wooded hillside above the Neckar. Friedrich's Wing is lined with stone ancestor statues, and the Powder Tower is split open like a cracked shell. Walk to the terrace first. It looks down the Neckar over the old town roofs.

Adult entry is €11, reduced €5.50. A guided tour costs €6 on top of that. The state palace administration makes large groups register in advance, and you book the guided tour separately.

The Heidelberger Bergbahn (Kornmarkt) starts at a lower station cut into the rock. The modern lower car climbs to the castle, and that leg sits inside the castle ticket. Cars leave every 10 to 20 minutes and there is no reservation system. Carrying on to the Königstuhl summit needs a Panorama ticket, €11 single or €17 return, in a 1907 varnished-timber carriage that grinds up through forest. The summer timetable holds to 1 November 2026, with last departures at 19:37. Winter pulls the last departure back to 17:17. The Bergbahn runs independently of the city transport network, and regional transit passes do not work on it.
Deutsches Apotheken-Museum is in the castle's Ottheinrich Wing and costs nothing extra. Rebuilt baroque apothecary shops fill the rooms indoors: walls of blue-and-gold ceramic drug jars, labelled wooden drawers, an alchemist's laboratory of copper stills. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 from April to 5 January, last entry 17:40. The first rooms are narrow and people bunch up in them. When an October afternoon turns wet, this is the fallback on the whole route.

Alte Brücke and the Marktplatz
Alte Brücke (Karl-Theodor-Brücke) is free and open at all hours. Nine red sandstone arches cross the Neckar to a twin-towered baroque gate at the old-town end, and the small brass Brückenaffe monkey holds its mirror beside the parapet. Stand here for the standard castle shot. The gate end jams up at midday.

Heiliggeistkirche (Marktplatz) is red sandstone Gothic and fills the square, with small shops wedged into the base of its outer walls. The nave is free to enter. The tower is €5, or €3 reduced, for 198 steps up the north aisle to a 38-metre platform. The stair is single file. In October the tower opens Wednesday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:00. Saturday it runs 11:00 to 16:00, and Sunday is 12:30 to 16:00. It then shuts from 2 November 2026 until 20 March 2027.

Studentenkarzer & Heidelberg University Museum sells timed tickets on the door at the Unishop. The combined adult ticket is €7.50, reduced €5. On Mondays a Karzer-only ticket is €6. Hours flip to winter in mid-October: Monday to Saturday 10:30 to 16:00, with a break from 13:45 to 14:15. Sundays are out from then. Groups of 15 or more must register two to four weeks ahead by email, and jackets and bags go in lockers. The cell is cramped and whitewashed, and every surface carries carved names, dates, silhouettes and painted verses left by jailed students. The door is a heavy plank and the bunk is bare.

Vetter's Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus (Steingasse) opens from 11:30 daily. Copper brewing kettles sit behind glass in a timber-beamed room, with long shared benches and tall glasses of unfiltered house beer. Mains run €15 to €25. Book ahead, because the room is long and narrow. Heidelberg's two famous student taverns open in the evening only, and a day out of Frankfurt will never see them.

Rothenburg's wall, Plönlein and the Burggarten
The Rothenburg Town Wall walk is free, ungated and open at all hours. A covered wooden-roofed sentry walkway runs inside the medieval wall, with arrow slits looking out over gardens and red tiled roofs and small engraved donor plaques screwed along the timbers. Long stretches are single file. The Röderturm climb is the paid part, €3 adult and €1.50 child, usually weekends only from 11:00 to 14:00.

Plönlein is a street junction and costs nothing. A small yellow half-timbered house with a crooked roof stands at a forked lane, a fountain in front of it, the tall Siebersturm gate on one side and the lower Kobolzeller gate dropping away on the other. The frame is tight and people queue informally for the shot. A few minutes here is the whole experience.
Burggarten is free, ungated parkland on the spur where the castle once stood. Lawns and gravel paths lead to the small Romanesque Blasiuskapelle standing alone, with the Tauber valley and its double-decker stone bridge far below. It is the best valley view in town for nothing, and a two-minute walk from the Crime Museum.

The paid stops inside the walls

St.-Jakobs-Kirche charges €3.50 adult and €2 for students over 12. The nave is tall Gothic under twin unequal towers, and the west gallery holds the limewood Holy Blood Altar by Tilman Riemenschneider, its figures deeply undercut and left unpainted. In October it opens 10:00 to 17:00. An admission desk inside moves larger parties through in batches. If something has to go, cut this one last.
Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum (Burggasse) runs four floors of iron shame masks, a spiked iron maiden, neck violins and chastity belts in low vaulted rooms, with legal manuscripts in glass cases. Adult entry is €10.50, students €7.50. Children pay €6 and the family ticket is €26.50. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 until 1 November 2026, then 11:00 to 16:00, with last entry 45 minutes before closing. The stairs and vaults are tight and entry is staggered. Give it an hour.

Rathausturm is 220 steps up through the Renaissance town hall, the last stretch a near-vertical wooden ladder through a hatch onto a cramped railed platform over the red roofscape and the Tauber valley. Entry is €4 adult, €2 for children under 14. A family ticket is €10. Through October it opens daily 09:30 to 12:30 and 13:00 to 17:00, and from November it is weekends 12:00 to 15:00. Only a handful of people stand on the platform at once, so expect a wait at the bottom. Skip it if tight spaces or heights bother you.

Käthe Wohlfahrt Weihnachtsdorf & Deutsches Weihnachtsmuseum (Herrngasse 1) is an indoor Christmas village under artificial snow, with a five-metre white tree turning slowly under 12,500 lights. The store is free to browse. The museum upstairs charges €4 adult, €2.50 reduced, and the family ticket is €7, for cases of antique glass ornaments and Advent calendars. Store and museum open daily 10:00 to 18:00 all year under the same ownership. Treat the two as one stop.
Diller Schneeballenträume (Obere Schmiedgasse) stacks its window with pyramids of Schneeballen, fist-sized balls of fried shortcrust strips dusted in icing sugar or coated in chocolate and nuts. They are €3 to €5 each. The counter handles tour-group volume. Seating is limited self-service and most people eat theirs in the street. A Schneeball is dense and dry. Buy one between two.

Paying at the door or booking ahead
Every admission on this route is sold at the counter on the day. Two things need arranging before you leave: the castle registration for a large party, and the student prison's email slot. A private full-day run to both towns operates seven days a week, and its season runs from 12 May 2026 to 23 December 2027. Set the castle's €11 bundle against any tour price before you decide, because the funicular leg and two museums are already inside it.
Best time to go in October
Saturday is the one October day when every climb on the route is open, with the Marktplatz church tower on its longest hours, the student prison open and the Röderturm in its weekend window. Sunday costs you the student prison once the winter hours start in mid-October. Midweek, Wednesday to Friday, gets the church tower and the student prison, and the Röderturm stays shut.
Do the Heidelberg side in the morning, take lunch at Vetter's, and cross to Rothenburg for the afternoon. Two Rothenburg stops are outdoors and open whatever the weather does, and the town's three indoor stops all close in the late afternoon.
Is it worth it
It suits a visitor with one free day who wants the castle terrace and the covered wall walk and will take half a day in each town. You climb stairs at every viewpoint and wait your turn at the photo corner, and at least one indoor stop goes unseen.
Before you go
Travel before 1 November 2026 and the long hours hold. After that the town hall tower drops to weekends, the Crime Museum shortens its day and the Marktplatz church tower closes for the winter. Register a large party at the castle, email the student prison two to four weeks ahead and reserve the Vetter's table. See the Frankfurt guide and the Frankfurt hotel search.

How much does Heidelberg Castle cost and what does the ticket include?
Adult entry is €11, reduced €5.50, and that ticket covers the funicular, the Great Barrel and the German Pharmacy Museum inside the castle. A guided tour costs €6 on top and is booked separately. The castle is open 09:00 to 18:00 daily, last admission 17:30.
Which day of the week works best in October 2026?
Saturday. The Heiliggeistkirche tower is open 11:00 to 16:00, the Studentenkarzer keeps its Monday to Saturday winter hours, and the Röderturm climb is usually weekends only, 11:00 to 14:00. On Sunday the Studentenkarzer is shut once winter hours start in mid-October.
What is free in both towns?
Alte Brücke is free and open around the clock. The Rothenburg town wall walk is free and ungated at any hour. Plönlein is a public street corner. The Burggarten is free parkland with the view down the Tauber valley, and the nave of the Heiliggeistkirche costs nothing.
Do I need to book anything in advance?
Admission is sold at the door everywhere on this route. Large groups have to register ahead with the state palace administration at Heidelberg Castle. Groups of 15 or more must email the Studentenkarzer two to four weeks out. Book a table at Vetter's, because the room is long and narrow. The private full-day run to both towns goes seven days a week.
What changes after 1 November 2026?
The Heidelberger Bergbahn is off its summer timetable, so the last departure is 17:17 instead of 19:37. The Medieval Crime Museum runs 11:00 to 16:00, the Rathausturm drops to weekends 12:00 to 15:00, and the Heiliggeistkirche tower shuts from 2 November 2026 until 20 March 2027.
